Remember The Good

When was the last time you were faced with a tough decision? Presented with a new challenge or struggle? How did you handle it? Did you take a deep breath, roll up the sleeves and say I’m gonna face you head on? Or did you say, you know what…the last time this happened I ended up in trouble. I made a bad decision, I really messed up. Oh well, forget it. This battle is already lost.
It’s funny how we spend so much time making decisions based on our pasts. Many times we have never fully recovered from a survivor’s perspective, looking at our gains and losses – knowing we did the best we could, then leaving it there. Often times we tend to look at every situation as if it’s the same situation we faced back then.

For example, perhaps for you it was a failed relationship where you were cheated on. And when he cheated, he wore a certain cologne. You broke up with him and moved on. Now, fast forward to three years later. You meet a handsome guy who smells of the same cologne, but when he asks for your phone number you tell him you don’t date cheaters. Because he reeked of the same cologne, which for you screams CHEATER!!!

Do I have to say here that it’s not necessarily true that he’s a cheater because of the cologne he wears? Of course not, you’re too smart. But what you may not be aware of is the fact that you’re still carrying so much baggage from your past experiences that you won’t even give yourself the opportunity to flourish.

Think of the last time you were in a desperate situation. Maybe you got evicted; maybe your car broke down on the way to a job interview. Maybe at the last minute you had no idea where you where going to sleep. Maybe you had no food and not a dime to your name. Maybe the relationship you gave your all to nearly destroyed you. Maybe you had a life threatening illness, or maybe you lost the perfect job, marriage, friendship, or lost yourself. Let me ask you this: What did God do?

My point exactly! Obviously something victorious happened, and you made it out. And today you’re still standing. But do you panic every time you think you have a cold (Oh, God it must be Lupus!), do you cower in fear when you think your boss is upset (That’s it, I know I’m getting fired TODAY.) Do you always let your mind wander to the past when you are facing a new challenge? Sister let me tell you what a dear friend told me. The past cannot offer you anything more than it already has. Let it go. You’re not the same. I’m sure that life lesson made you stronger! Believe for something different to happen! And most of all, remember what God did.

So often we remember our pasts, and forget what God did. It is time for us to live from a place where we forget out pasts, and remember what God has done!
